a chasm opened in the earth and out of it coal-black horses sprang, drawing a chariot and driven by one who had a look of dark splendor, majestic and beautiful and terrible.

[5/6] LEGENDARY CREATURES | NÜ GUI

Nü gui (女鬼) is a vengeful female ghost in Chinese mythology. She is depicted with long hair while wearing a white dress.

In some folklore, this ghost is the spirit of a woman who committed suicide while wearing a red dress. Usually, she met with some injustice when she was alive, such as being wronged or sexually abused and thus she returns to take her revenge. A tabloid story tells of a funeral ceremony where family members of a murder victim dress her in red, hoping that her spirit will return to take revenge on her murderer. The color red symbolizes anger and vengeance in the context of ghosts.

On the other hand, some ancient folk tales tell of beautiful female ghosts who seduce men and absorb their yang essence or sometimes kill them. This type of female ghost is likened to the succubus.

MYTHOLOGY MEME [4/8] Legendary Creatures

The Nephilim were a race of giants that were produced by the sexual union of the sons of God (presumably fallen angels) and the daughters of men. Translated from the Hebrew texts, “Nephilim” means “fallen ones.”

They were renowned for their strength, prowess, and a great capacity for sinfulness. The Nephilim were gigantic in stature. Their strength was prodigious and their appetites immense.

The wickedness of the Nephilim carried with it a heavy toll. Genesis 6:5 alludes to the corruption that the Nephilim had caused amongst humans and themselves: “The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become…” Their evil rebellion had incurred both the wrath and grief of God. God instructed the angel Gabriel to ignite a civil war among the Nephilim. He also chose Enoch, a righteous man, to inform the fallen angels of the judgment pronounced on them and their children. God did not allow the fallen angels any peace, for they could not lift their eyes to heaven and were later to be chained. The end of the Nephilim came about in the war incited by Gabriel, in which the giants eventually annihilated each other.

Mythological creatures around the world | Feyfolk
Dryads come from Greek mythology and are female tree spirits. They are generally very shy and hard to catch a glimpse of as they hide deep in their forests. The dryads are tied to their trees; they will become injured when the tree is injured, and they die when the tree dies. For this reason, the Gods punish any human who harms or cuts down trees without first propitiating the dryads.

Vampires
“A vampire lives in a constant state of desire and disgust. Their nature often revolts them, but they don’t have the will to deny their indulgences. There’s the killing, but there’s also the pleasure, the sensuality, the lust. The sheer ecstasy of it all.”

Legendary Creatures: Rusalki

Rusalki are fish-women, who lived at the bottom of rivers. In the middle of the night, they walk out onto the bank and dance in meadows. If they saw a handsome man, they would fascinate them with songs and dancing, mesmerize them, and then lead them away to the river floor to their death.

In Slavic lore especially, rusalka are “the spirits of girls who died ‘before their time’ and returned to live as spirit being in our world, near where they had once lived and died” [x]

↳ Angels

In Christian tradition, angels are divine creatures created for a single purpose – to love and serve God. Biblical angels are fearsome beings, divided into nine heavenly choirs; from highest to lowest, the order reads as follows: seraphim, cherubim, thrones, dominions, virtues, powers, principalities, archangels, and angels.

Fallen angels are often described as devils or demons, the leader of whom is an entity once known as the Morning Star, God’s most beloved angel – Lucifer.
