Styx was the name of the underground river that separated Earth from the Underworld, but was also the name of the goddess who personified it. Meaning “spite”, the goddess was the personification of hate itself. The daughter of titans Oceanus and Tethys, she was one of the four underworld rivers. For providing aid to Zeus during the coup of the Titanomachy, she was given the mantle as the goddess of oaths. Those who could bear the pain that came under the river would become reborn and invulnerable as was the case of famous heroes such as Achilles. To go against an oath sworn upon the river Styx meant suffering the cruel consequences of the punishment and pain that flowed through the river itself.

Although her mother’s identity is a subject of great debate, most agree that Athena was born in full battle-gear from Zeus’s head, and gave a mighty war-cry. Her eyes were said to be terrifyingly bright and either grey or blue, and she carried the head of a gorgon on her shield to intimidate and scare her enemies. In any case, Athena was the virgin goddess of wisdom and crafts, but at the same time a goddess of war and heroics.

Artemis and Apollo were the twins of Zeus and Leto. Since their father was already married to Hera, their mother was relentlessly pursued by her, and could not rest long enough to give birth. Eventually, Leto found refuge on the floating isle of Delos and gave birth to Artemis, who then assisted with the birth of her twin brother Apollo.

Artemis became the virgin goddess of wilderness and hunting, but also the patroness of childbirth and the protector of young girls; Apollo became the god of oracles and prophecy, music, poetry, archery, and disease, but also the protector of young boys. Together, the twins were also harbingers of illness and sudden death.
